Fire crews extinguish flames in cellar of house in Knowle Park

FIRE crews tackled a blaze in the cellar of a house in Third Avenue, Knowle Park, early this morning. (July 1)

They were called to the scene at 1.30am.

Keighley Fire Station watch commander Andy Quinn said the home’s resident had returned home from work to find smoke coming from the grate leading to his cellar.

He immediately alerted the fire service and crews from both Keighley and Bingley reacted.

Watch commander Andy Quinn said: “It was a smouldering fire and only took us about 20 minutes to put out.
“There was a lot of smoke damage, most of which was confined to the cellar area. It looked to have been started accidentally.”

A massive blaze swept through a Keighley town centre store on Tuesday evening.

Dozens of firefighters tackled the inferno at Poundstretcher, in the Cavendish Retail Park.

A large plume of black smoke drifted north over Keighley shortly before 7pm and crowds of onlookers gathered in Cavendish Street and East Parade.

Police closed both the streets to traffic, along with part of Worth Way.

At times the smoke was so dense the store was barely visible from Cavendish Street and particles of ash floated down on to the people watching the fire.

Carla Richardson, 32, one of the bystanders on Cavendish Street, said: “I was coming home from work and got completely stuck in a traffic jam. I wasn’t going anywhere.

“I left my car to come and have a look and saw flames coming out of the roof.

“I really hope there was no one in there. The inside must be gutted.”

Another onlooker, 46-year-old Safdar Malik, said: “It’s pretty shocking to see a fire this big right in the middle of town.

“They seem to have stopped the flames now but the damage must be huge.”

An East Parade shopkeeper, who did not want to be named, said: “I was just closing up when my brother called me and said ‘have you seen what’s going on outside your place?’ “When I went out it was chaos – the road was closed off by the police and the back of Poundstretcher had flames and smoke pouring out.

“The wind wasn’t blowing the smoke my way at least. I’m just glad it hasn’t spread to other buildings.”

At least eight fire engines and a mobile command unit were deployed in Cavendish Street and East Parade.

By 8pm there were no flames visible on the outside of the building, but firefighters were still hosing water on to the store from two aerial platforms.
